Keep the Light Burning

Kol Hadash Hannukah 5783

Words of Welcome

For Humanistic Jews, Hanukkah is a celebration of human courage, integrity, and hope. We honor the human capacity to share peace and honor the concerns of those who are hurting, as we kindle the Hanukkah lights. We celebrate the life, imagination and the wellspring of creativity that makes meaning and share wondrous stories of our ancestors. We cherish the wonder of each thing, the order of the universe that binds us together with all of nature, for the life that surrounds and sustains us, and for the conditions that have brought us to this season.

Reflections

Memories of Holidays Past

How are You Carrying the Light Forward?

Kindling the Light: the first 5 candles

As we light our Hanukkah candles, let us say:

Barukh haor baolam.

Barukh haor baadam.

Barukh haor baHanukkah.

Blessed is the light of the world.

Blessed is the light within humanity.

Blessed is the light of Hanukkah.

Music - Light One Candle

- by Peter, Paul, & Mary

Light one candle for the Maccabee children

Give thanks that their light didn't die!

Light one candle for the pain they endured

When their right to exist was denied!

Light one candle for the terrible sacrifice

Justice and freedom demand!

And light one candle for the wisdom to know

When the peacemaker's time is at hand!

Don't let the light go out! It's lasted for so many years!

Don't let the light go out! Let it shine through our love and our tears.

Light one candle for the strength we all need

To never become our own foe!

And light one candle for those who are suff'ring

Pain we learned so long ago!

Light one candle for all we believe in,

Let anger not tear us apart!

And light one candle to bind us together

With peace as the song in our heart!

Don't let the light go out! It's lasted for so many years!

Don't let the light go out! Let it shine through our love and our tears

Gratitude

Closing Blessing

Let your light shine. The inner light that you carry is to be a gift to the world. May the tradition of shining this light out from our hearth be a courageous and hope-filled invitation for our neighbors to be part of the radiant love that makes miracles with human hands. May this community keep shining brightly, radiating peace upon the earth. And may each of you go forth to share your light so that comfort may come to all who are warmed by it!
